ANIMALS being raised in China's Hebei province to supply fur for clothing are being skinned alive, a Swiss animal protection group said today. The group (PSA) said it had six hours of video film and 550 photographs taken by local activists showing foxes, wild dogs or martens being clubbed or thrown to the ground to knock them unconscious, thereby avoiding damage to their pelts.

Most of the animals are just stunned and often recover consciousness while they are being skinned, leaving them in agony for up to ten minutes before they die, PSA said in a statement.

"This inconceivable horror exceeds anything we knew so far on the way animals are killed in the west," it added.

Many cheap furs on sale in Europe, or used as linings for hoods and collars, come from China, according to the group.

It said it wanted every consumer to understand "how these animals lived and how they met their end".

More than 1.5 million foxes, and about as many martens, mink, rabbits, dogs and cats are raised in China every year for their fur, according to PSA.

The animal protection group asked the Swiss government last year to ban imports of dog and cat fur from China.

The appalling discovery found about Burlington Coat Factory stores across
the United States has created a stir of emotions for animal lovers
everywhere. This news became known on national television when it was
revealed that Burlington Coat Factory actually sold coats that were trimmel with mongolian dog fur from China.

Despite sufficient evidence (such as boxes clearly labeled "Mongolian Dog
Fur"), Burlington Coat Factory denied that they had any knowledge of this and stated that they believed it was coyote fur. The corporation bought its
way out of this situation by donating towards an investigation which helped
to stop the selling of dog and cat fur.

Nevertheless, Burlington Coat Factory continues to sell coats with animal
skins and refuses to acknowledge the fact that animals suffer a great deal
for fur trimmed products, which continue to rise in popularity. By signing
below, you agree to help boycott Burlington Coat Factory stores
across the United States until they stop the selling of real animal fur.
With the initial release of this information last year, the company's
reputation has already been stained. This is not enough. We need to show
that people are aware of what is happening and that we will not stand for
it. With the world becoming more environmentally aware, increased concern for animals has also risen steadily. We will not tolerate this and will not stop boycotting Burlington Coat Facory and stores like it until all acts of animal cruelty are abolished.
