Dear Sir, dear Madam,

I appreciate very much your commitment to the fight against disease , by funding crucial medical research that will someday soon find a cure, and patient programs that make a difference to sick patients today.

But your Foundation is still doing research on animals.

Do you know that animals undergo invasive procedures, taxing behavioral drills, isolation and death, primarily to demonstrate redundant information with no bearing on human health?
Indeed, Dr. Roger E. Ulrich states: "I discovered that experiments on animals offer only the illusion of control. By simplifying and segmenting the life of an organism, we create false data which, combined with the differences among species, make our efforts to apply the results to man, useless."
Ethical unease and growing recognition of the inability to extrapolate data from animals to humans have prompted the discovery of sophisticated non-animal systems.
Many facilities fulfill study criterion with in vitro cell and tissue culture analysis, epidemiology, videos and mathematical modeling, genetic and protein analysis, virtual organs and 3-D models, clinical research, autopsy/biopsy studies, advanced MRI imaging, and a multitude of other non-animal tools.
Animal experiments deflect focus and funding from cost-effective research that fosters knowledge pertinent to humans. Each species is so diverse in terms of its anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and genetics that rodents or other animal models are unlikely to yield important results.

I'd like to draw your attention to some examples of charities that have been awarded the Humane Seal : the Cancer Treatment Research Foundation, Birth Defect Research for Children, Inc. the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade, and the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.
Those foundations signed the Humane Charity Seal of Approval. The Humane Seal is the easiest way to for health charities to show their commitment to providing direct care and services to patients, supplying health education, and funding vital, nonanimal research.

For many donors, whether or not a charity funds animal research is a key concern. In a recent poll of 1,006 adults, conducted by the Opinion Research Corporation International of Princeton, NJ, for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, 51 percent agreed with the statement, “I would be more likely to donate to a health charity that had a policy of never funding any type of animal experiments.” The major donors of tomorrow are even more likely to be influenced by a charity’s stance on animal testing, with 70 percent of 18-to 24-year-olds preferring their donations not go to experiments on animals.

So, as long your foundation continues to waste valuable resources on animal research, I will not support you or any of your sponsors.

Thank you for your attention to this very important issue.

Sincerely,

If an animal is in pain or in distress, you might not be getting the same reactions. It's not a normal-state animal and that could skew the scientific results. We look to practice the best science and the most humane science."
