LETTRE :
Dear Mr. Van Schalkwyk and the Ministry of Environmental Affairs and Tourism:
I firmly oppose South Africa National Parks' (SANParks) strategy for
cultivating biodiversity in Kruger National Park. To preserve Kruger's flora
and fauna, SANParks intends to roundup and slaughter some 6,500 elephants,
thereby decreasing the country's elephant population by half.
This cull is profoundly inhumane. Helicopters will drive panicked elephants
into groups so gunmen can immobilize them with tranquilizer darts and shoot
them at close proximity.
An elephant's range of communication is vast. Other elephants will hear
death cries from more than a mile away. Survivors will live in a shadow of
terror and panic. Mass killings will irreversibly disrupt a complex
community of animals who forge societies, care for their young, and convey
emotions from joy to sorrow.
This cull has no scientific merit. Before wiping out a significant sector of
the park's elephants, officials must authorize an unbiased scientific study
to determine if the elephants actually threaten biodiversity. Presently,
there is no empirical proof to support this claim.
This cull is a reckless and outmoded form of wildlife control. I implore
officials to heed viable guidance from scientists, as reported by Care for
the Wild International:
--Restrict manufactured water holes to redirect elephants to under-used
locales.
--Expand elephant habitats by linking Kruger National Park to other
safeguarded areas through a chain of migration corridors.
--Create wildlife conservation programs beyond already protected areas to
enhance tourism in nearby rural communities.
--Build/maintain fences and other nonlethal deterrents to guard vulnerable
terrain.
--Initiate a targeted wildlife contraception program.
Integrating non-lethal methods is not only more humane, but could also
sustain current elephant numbers over a broader range.
This cull is bad for tourism. In 1994, South Africa prohibited the culling
of herds in response to public opposition. The global community disapproves
of this massacre. It will have a negative impact upon South Africa's
significant ecotourism industry.
I strongly urge you to order a scientific assessment of the situation and
employ non-lethal solutions, if necessary. Please do not stain Kruger
National Park with the blood of thousands of elephants.
Thank you,
