Lettre 1
Lettre adressée au ministre du Tourisme en Egypte demandant de reforcer les
lois de protection des animaux (il s'agit ici du transport de moutons)
Envoyer à: Mot@idsc.gov.eg
Objet: Animal protection laws
To :
Mr. Mohamed Zohair Mohamed Wahid Garana
Minister of Tourism
32 Ramsis St.
El Abassia Square
Cairo, Egypt
Dear Minister Zoheir Garanah
I have recently viewed video footage taken in Cairo showing terrible abuse
of animals. The footage showed sheep being dragged, bound with rope, shoved
into car boots, tied onto car roofs, and thrown trussed on their backs into
trucks.

The footage also showed cattle in the streets of Cairo having their leg
tendons cuts to disable them prior to slaughter. Similar evidence
revealing this brutal treatment of cattle was taken in Cairo’s Bassateen
abattoir earlier in 2006 – proving to the international community that such
barbaric and unacceptable slaughter practices are routine in Egypt.
I am aware that Egypt is a signatory to the OIE (World Animal Health
Organisation) and yet the basic standards required by the OIE regarding the
handling, transportation and slaughter of animals clearly have not been
implemented as yet in Egypt.
Currently the terrible treatment of animals in Egypt is impacting on
Egypt’s international reputation and convincing tourists from all countries
around the world to consider other destinations more appropriate to visit.
I appeal to the Egyptian government to pass and enforce strict animal
protection laws to prohibit such terrible practices and to raise awareness
of the importance of treating animals humanely. The passing of such laws
will be applauded by the international community.
Sincerely,
